KATE FLETCHER

Bio

Kate Fletcher began running at age 35, to show her struggling students that any goal is possible with dedication and hard work. In 2015, Kate had an epiphany about how she could combine her two greatest passions–running and teaching–to set an example of perseverance while raising funds that could help her students reach their dreams. Those dreams are often pursued wholeheartedly, despite the shadow of economic insecurity. More than 40% of the students at the rural high school where Kate teaches, in Louisa, VA, receive free and reduced lunch, with rates closer to 50% at the county’s four elementary schools. These percentages also indicate the number of students who will face a great need when it’s time to pay for college. Kate was inspired to start The Lion Pride Run Scholarship Fund by her students’ remarkable strengths, as well as their many unmet needs. In her classes, year after year, she sees committed, hard-working, resilient students, who have overcome difficult obstacles in their lives and endured for the long haul, yet they are not always able to afford the opportunities they have earned. Each year, Kate runs an ultra distance in honor of these students, hoping to raise scholarship funds along the way. Since the Lion Pride Run’s conception, she has completed six ultra distances for her students, including a 100-mile run around the high school track, a 40-mile run to each of the six schools in her district over the course of a school day, and most recently, a 105-mile run from Louisa County High School to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. This year, Kate will be participating in the Texas500, hoping to raise scholarship funds for her deserving students yet again.
